Fun artistic facts about the creation of Anchorage Opera’s 50th Anniversary Season- The Golden Age, The Encore!

If opera is the glorious presentation all performing arts- voice, orchestra, acting, and sometimes even dance- then it is appropriate that we look at other great leading artists for inspiration.

Our 50th Anniversary Season pays homage to our more recent Golden Age – the Golden and roaring Twenties. Specifically, popular artist of the era, Gustav Klimt. Klimt’s use of gold foil and beautiful detailed color sparked our interest for imagery to lead the next 50 years of Arts Alive in Alaska. Our Golden Lady is a direct and strong representation of Klimt’s Judith I., celebrating the joy and beauty of youth, both in art and music.

Ricky Ian Gordon’s The Grapes of Wrath Takes Alaska by Storm!

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2011 … Ricky Ian Gordon’s The Grapes of Wrath had its Pacific Northwest premiere tonight before a SOLD OUT audience in Anchorage, Alaska! Nearly 2000 people were swept away by the majestic power of The Grapes of Wrath.

According to Mike Dunham, Arts Critic with the Anchorage Daily News, “it was probably the most impressive production yet for Anchorage Opera from a purely sonic standpoint.” Also, for numerous ‘Sourdoughs’ (long-time Alaskans) who attended the concert, The Grapes of Wrath was “the best premiere of a new opera in Alaskan history.” And, “the future of Opera is very promising as long as we have conductors like Sara Jobin and composers like Ricky Ian Gordon who possess extraordinary artistic intellectualism and popular sensitivity.”
